Term 4 Speaking Challenge

Dear Year 4 Parents (and students),

Next term the students will begin to use the speaking and listening skills that they have been developing over Term 1.

Each week we will have 4 students present their 90 second speech that they have planned.

Any parent support at home would be greatly appreciated, particularly with the speaking techniques and the content.

The Term 4 theme will be: " If I could live in another part of the world, it would be...."

Read below for more detail.
Assessment - The students will be assessed on the speaking techniques that they have been developing in Term 1. Each will have a score of 5 points, a total of 20 for the presentation.

Make appropriate eye contact
5 points
Make eye contact with your partner   regularly.  When speaking to a larger group, make eye contact with many members of the audience, in front of you and to the sides, as you speak.
Use clear volumea tone of voicepacing and pauses to engage the audience
5 points
Speak slowly and clearly when describing and explaining. Pause after introducing new information. Sound excited when describing exciting things.
Use visual aids to engage the interest of the audience
5 points
Show the audience models, pictures or examples of your topic. Be careful not to hide your face. Don’t let the visual aids become a distraction
Conclude the talk – Decide how you will end your talk
5 points
“And last of all …..........
“The final thing is ….....
”I would like to remind you ….....

Confidence
The students are already showing more confidence in public speaking as we develop this safe culture in our class and lessons. This will continue to flourish with each new speaking challenge each term.

Listening
We are also developing listening skills. All students in the audience each week will be assessed on their listening skills. This are listed below:

Show attentive listening through body language
Eyes
Face and Head
Listen with your brain
Hands
1. Face the speaker and make some eye contact.
2. Encourage the speaker by nodding and smiling, laughing in appropriate places
3. Listen for key words and main ideas
4. Avoid speaking or whispering with anyone else in the audience or distracting the speaker for fidgeting.
Formulate questions to probe for extra information, or to clarify information. Some examples could be:

“What has been your best time?”
”What is your favourite event?”
”What are you hoping to achieve next?”
Decide when it is appropriate to ask a question

Discuss times when is it helpful to interrupt, and when it is better to wait until the speaker has finished

Show appreciation when speaking and listening with a partner or in a group

I liked the bit about ...
You should tell ... They would like to hear
 Applause

Success Criteria
Along with the above details, the students have also received demonstrations on presentation skills and have had a session on planning and presenting the Term 4 theme; " If I could live in another part of the world, it would be...."
