Week 2 Term 4 - revised!

Good evening,

I'm sorry this blog post has arrived a little later than usual, it has taken me a little longer to sort myself after a wonderful weekend at family camp. No matter where you were this weekend, I hope you all had a wonderful time and the best thing is...we only have 3 more days to go until the next one!

What's Happening This Week?
Art: Over the next 6 weeks students will be learning Art with Miss Charles every Friday afternoon. The artist in focus for the unit is local artist, Ian Mutch. Ian's work is visible throughout the South West. Please encourage students to find and appreciate some of his murals around town. They can be found at the following locations: The Coles complex alley way between Stocker Preston and the BP petrol station, the wall across the front of the Dunsborough Pub, the large wall on the south side of Mitre 10 (near where Blue Wren Gallery used to be)  and the Art Society building near the bowling club. Furthermore, this Saturday the 20th of October, Ian is launching his new children's book. The launch is held at 7 Clarke Street from 4pm until 6pm. The students will be responding to his art work this Friday afternoon so it could be quite fitting for them to attend his book launch the following day. If they can't attend, Ian will be joining the students in class to support them with their artworks and share his background over the course of the term. More information on the event can be found at Ian's facebook page.

This week students have been focusing on debating the topic "Should we use S.M.A.R.T. Drum lines in the South West?" This is a highly relevant, authentic topic as this technology has recently been deployed around Gracetown and will be in place for a 12 month trial. A public consult was recently held and more S.M.A.R.T drum lines may be put in place further along the coast line. The students are exploring and researching both sides of the debate and are challenged to provide opinion, facts and statistics to support their side of the argument. Students are constructing persuasive arguments and will present a formal debate on Monday 22nd October in class. Over the week, they are being exposed to the importance of S.M.A.R.T Drum lines concerning tag and release programs and research, as well as the importance of preserving ecologies, minimising impact to shark's natural behaviour and the facts about Great Whites as a vulnerable species with populations facing potential extinction.

The following links outline some of the information students have been exposed to:

Calendar Orders:Thank you to those who have sent back their Calendar orders. If you would like to order your child's artwork to purchase as a calendar, please fill out the order form sent home last week and return to the classroom with the money by this Friday 19th October.

NEW!! Interschool Athletics Carnival:Just a reminder that the Interschool Athletics Carnival is NOW on Thursday 25th October. Please remember the students need to wear their school sports uniform (green polo) and bring their recess, lunch, water bottle and hat on the day. It does look like it may be raining, so some wet weather gear may also be appropriate.

It has been a busy start to the term already, but we have really got stuck into some juicy stuff. I'm looking forward to see where it leads us.
