Week 5 - Half way there!

Good morning,

We hope you had a fun-filled weekend in the glorious sunshine! I had family down from Perth and getting out and about made me realise how lucky we are to live in such a special place.

A big congratulations to all the year four's who swam last week in their first swimming carnival. There were a few nerves on the day, however they all can be proud that they had a go and tried their best! Well done to Jaz, Ebony, Lara and Vinny for receiving a medal on the day

REMINDERS - WEEK 5

Ash Wednesday Mass - Tomorrow the 6th of March is Ash Wednesday. The Year Four's will be leading a mass in the hall tomorrow at 9am to welcome the season of Lent. We would love it if you are able to join us, to celebrate this important Catholic ritual.

We ask that those students who have a reading part to practise tonight to ensure they are confident tomorrow during the mass.

Swimming Lessons - Week 6&7 - Swimming lessons begin next Monday 11th March and run for two weeks. Our lessons take place at Dunsborough Foreshore (Jetty) at 1.05-1.45pm. We will be leaving school at 12.45pm.

Our learning program will run as normal up until lunchtime. As you can imagine, after two weeks of this the children will be very tired, I ask that your children get as much rest and sleep during this period to ensure they still have the energy to learn each day.

We ask that your child wears their bathers to school underneath their sports uniform to make life easier for them. They are to wear their sneakers to school and bring their thongs to change into at swimming time. No child is to wear their things to school during these days. They will need:
  • Swimming bag - not their school bag
  • Bathers & Rashie - please note that all children must wear a rashie to keep them sun safe.
  • Thongs
  • Towel
  • Goggles
  • Water bottle - perhaps think about packing a spare one as it can be a long hot day for them!
Please ensure all items are labelled to prevent items being lost

Harmony Day 2019
FROM JULIE BIRCH
Dear Parents,
We need you…..
On the 29th of March the students of Our Lady of the Cape Primary School will celebrate Harmony Day.

It is our aim to support the development of respect and appreciation for cultures other than their own in the students. To do this we would like to immerse the children in a rich variety of experiences that include food, music, visual arts and the development of a knowledge base of the cultural traditions of others.

Information is always best coming from those who have experienced the learning first hand so we are asking parents help out on the day.

We would love parents to lead an activity as part of a rotation between 9am and 11am on the day.  There would be no more than 20 children in each group. Each session would last 15 minutes and you would repeat this activity up to 6 six times.

If you were born in another country you may wish to present some photographs, samples of traditional foods, clothing, games etc. and tell the children about how you grew up. How is was different to here… and the same as here.

If you can play a musical instrument you may like to share your skills.  The children would love to listen.

Perhaps you can write some great haiku… or fold some tricky origami.
Those of you who teach dance, karate or craft may like to come and share your talents.
Children always love to cook.  We would love to have someone making pasta, pizza or some other cultural delight (remembering that you only have 15 minutes).
So… if you can help please email Julie Birch.

OUR LEARNING

In our reading sessions this week, we will be focusing on learning about the season of Lent and the special days that are important during this time in the lead up to Easter.

The students are now working on publishing their setting descriptions that they wrote last week. They have done an incredible job with the use of their adjectives, similes, onomatopoeia and noun groups, I highly recommend you coming in to read them once they are completed.

In our Religion lessons we will be learning about the season of Lent and as part of this we began some charcoal drawings that reflect on Jesus and the sacrifices he made for us during this special time. They will be on display in the hall as of tomorrow to support the Ash Wednesday Mass.

HOMEWORK - WEEK 5

Please see below for the homework assigned for this week. There was some incomplete homework that was given in last week. If you can please support your child to complete all parts of their homework each week. This helps with their personal organisation reduces anxiety of getting in trouble when it is not done.

1. Reading - Students are to read for 10 minutes each night and enter it into their Reading Log. They are to bring it to you to be signed each night.

2. Timetables practise this is the last week we are focusing on our 6 timestables. They will be tested at the end of the week! The students are to practise at least 5 times throughout the week at home. We are hoping that you are able to quiz them as often as possible to ensure their recall of their timestable facts is accurate and efficient. Please sign their Homework log when you have done this.

3. Mental Maths- Complete Unit 4, p.8&9. This will be marked on Friday morning.

4. Spelling - the students are to complete LSCWC with their new spelling words each night.
They are to also complete dictionary meanings for their words which are due on Friday morning. Please note the students will be retaining the same spelling lists in week 6 due to the short week.

Have a wonderful week everyone. Hopefully the sun will keep shining:)
