Week 4 Term 4 - OMG the End is Near!

Good morning parents,

Welcome back to what is shaping up to be a much nicer weekend weather wise! I hope the rain filled up your tanks and gave your car a good wash!

REMINDERS - WEEK 4

Mr John Hogan Healing Mass - You may have read in the newsletter that John Hogan has recently been diagnosed with cancer. We will be holding a whole school mass on Friday morning at Our Lady of the Southern Cross beginning at 9.30am. All parents are warmly invited to attend if you are able. Award cards and MJR awards will be given at Mass as well.

Excursion to Eagle Heritage - We will be putting on our research hats on Thursday and heading off to visit Eagle Heritage to observe the features of the birds of prey. We will then be heading off to visit Mr Alan Meyburgh at his studio to experiment with making our own birds of prey using recycled materials...it is looking to be a beautiful day and I am sure the kids will have a lot of fun! Please make sure your child's permission slip has been returned by tomorrow.

Uthando Doll Thank You Afternoon Tea - We will be having a small afternoon tea next Wednesday afternoon (13th November) to hand over the dolls ready for them to be sent off! All parents that came to help in our weekly sessions are warmly invited to attend.

WWWFW - It is looking to be better weather wise this week! Thank you for your support in sending in waste free lunches and coordinating bike rides and buddies! A couple of weeks to go...let's go 4R! Apparently we are right up there in contention for the win.

OUR LEARNING

We have once again been working hard in 4R in our literacy lessons, we have been learning about how to make connections within our reading to ourselves, other types of texts and how this can anchor me to the world.

We have been looking at the structure of an informative text as well as the different types of language that should be appearing in our writing. We have learnt about subject specific and comparative language and this week we will begin looking at the language of cause and effect...it goes something like this. "If you don't have your room cleaned up when I ask, this will result in you not being allowed to go for your sleepover on the weekend".

In Math's we have been looking at time and completed our end of unit assessment today. This is always a tricky concept and one that needs to be practiced constantly, any time you can direct your child's attention to reading the time both digitally and in analogue time will help a lot. Another important part to this is asking them to calculate elapsed time...how many minutes or hours have passed or how many minutes do we have before we need to leave to head to school/basketball training/dancing or until bedtime.

In our STEM lessons, the students had a fantastic time building their towers...it felt like a small city! Justin, Rhavi, Hudson were able to build the biggest tower at 2.71m...nearly touching the roof! The students are really working hard to understand the technical language and considerations of each of the challenges and are really enjoying them!

HOMEWORK - WEEK 4

1. Reading - As part of our reading group rotations, the students will be writing a book review on a familiar book of their choice. Students are to read for 15 minutes each night. Please encourage them to read out loud to you at least twice a week.
2. Mental Maths- Complete Unit 30All sections are to be completed by Friday.

3Spelling - LSCWC & Word Study Activity Sheet. These are to be completed by Friday.

4Champion Life Challenges - If you can encourage your child to complete at least one video challenge a week. This is a fantastic initiative which whilst increasing levels of physical activity also aims to inspire students through valuable life learning.

Have a great week!
