Week 5 Term 2

Good morning,

I'm hoping you've been able to keep safe and warm throughout this cold and blustery weekend. Take me back to last weekend, when I was sitting on the beach and soaking up the sun!

CLASSROOM
Congratulations to Jasper and Zahra on receiving a Merit award at Friday's assembly, they are shining stars in our class.🎉

Religion
We began the Eucharist banners this week and the students loved it. I must thank Sue-Ellen Phillips for donating some of her time to sew the hems for these banners. We have two sessions planned in this week to continue these, one of them being Friday at 11.30 - 12.40. If you are able to lend a hand at this session it would be handy as we will be sticking their pieces down to their banners with hot glue guns. It is not a problem if you can't, as I am already conscious of the amount of parent help we are receiving at this stage. Please know that it is always appreciated.

Literacy
1. Reading Comprehension Strategy - This week we are putting our Reading Groups on hold, as we are still at the drafting stage of our narratives and require longer writing sessions to ensure the concepts are modeled and then written correctly by the students.
2. Spelling - Kangaroo group - Prefixes – tele, phon, photo and graph
Possum group - R-Influenced O in Accented Syllables e.g. forty
Lorakeet group - /sh/ sound – sh, ti, ch, si, ssi, ci (continued from last week)
3. Narratives- this week we are continuing to write the draft of their own narrative. These will be finished and edited this week. Ready to be published the week after.

Maths
We have begun our topic of 'Chance and Probability'. We will continue to explore the meaning of these two terms and apply them to everyday situations, as well as, determine what is fair and unfair.

This week we will revise the properties of materials, in particular 'strong' (strength) and 'flexibility'. Using spaghetti, the children are going to explore the terms, tension and comprehension, in an attempt to make the best suspension bridge for a loaded toy truck to drive over. They will have to investigate the best way to support and connect the strands of spaghetti and determine the amount of strands required to be strong enough. This will be a good team building exercise, as the last final challenge is timed and then judged! Stay tuned for photos next week.

IMPORTANT EVENTS COMING UP:
Euthando Dolls
Thank you to all the parent helpers that attended last Friday afternoon's Euthando Double Up session. You are all very talented, yes, even you Ken with those very witty and on topic jokes! Adrian has asked for donations of CLEAN and REASONABLY NEW socks to the project, as these come in very handy to create little hats and underwear for the dolls.

On Wednesday 6th June, there will be NO Euthando Doll making session, as we have the 'Go Fish' Musical Matinee, starting at 1.30pm. However in week 7, we will do a Wednesday and Friday double up if needed.

First Eucharist Money is NOW DUE
Just a reminder that those participating in the Eucharist, need to pay $10 to cover the costs of the little gifts, certificates and treat they will receive. I thank you to those people who have already handed this in.

First Eucharist Family Poster - Not long now!
Thank you for the 5 First Eucharist posters I have already received. Just a reminder that these are due on Monday 11th June (not long now), so we have enough time to display it at the church before the Eucharist mass. All children are to complete one of these to display.

Go Fish Musical - Friday Week 6
Matinee - Wednesday 6th June @ 1.30pm
Show - Friday 8th June @ 6.30pm (gold coin donation on the night)

First Eucharist Mass - Sunday 17th June
On Sunday 17th June, we have our First Eucharist Mass where the children will receive communion for the first time. It is expected that everyone attends the mass, even those not receiving the sacrament, in support of their peers.

Enjoy the remainder of the weekend!
